Is a Kotor day trip from Dubrovnik worth it?

For most visitors, yes. A Kotor day trip from Dubrovnik takes you around one of the Adriatic’s most striking bays to a walled town that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with Perast on the way. The cost is a long day: usually 10 to 12 hours, with about four hours of driving and four passport checks, because Montenegro is outside the EU.

The secret of a good Kotor day is timing: an early start to beat the border queue, and a plan that avoids the busiest hours in Kotor’s old town.

How do you get from Dubrovnik to Kotor?

Kotor is about 92 km from Dubrovnik’s Old Town by the road around the Bay of Kotor, roughly two hours of driving. The road follows the D8 coast south-east past the airport to the border at Karasovići, then continues through Herceg Novi and around the bay through Risan and Perast.

The short car ferry between Kamenari and Lepetane cuts across the narrows. It runs every 15 to 20 minutes around the clock in the 2026 summer timetable and costs €5 per car, according to the ferry operator. For Kotor it saves about 12 km and 20 minutes, but summer queues of 30 to 45 minutes at the ramp can cancel the saving, and the road around the bay is the more beautiful drive.

How does the border work on a day trip?

You cross four times: out of Croatia and into Montenegro on the way there, and the reverse on the way back. At Karasovići, the main crossing, waits range from 15 to 30 minutes in winter to several hours on peak summer days, and the worst time is late morning to early afternoon.

Non-EU visitors are registered in the EU’s Entry/Exit System on their first crossing, which can mean stepping out of the car, according to the Croatian Ministry of the Interior. Bring a passport, or an identity card if you are an EU citizen. Our Montenegro border guide covers documents, waits and EES in detail.

What is there to see in Kotor?

Kotor’s old town is part of the “Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor”, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979. It was placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger the same year, after the earthquake of 15 April 1979, and stayed there until 2003. The fortifications are also part of a second World Heritage listing, the Venetian Works of Defence, shared by Italy, Croatia and Montenegro.

The old town is closed to cars and is entered through three gates: the Sea Gate, the River Gate and the Gurdić Gate. Above it, the walls run for about 4.5 km and climb to the San Giovanni fortress, some 260–280 m above the town. The path has about 1,350 steps and takes most visitors 45 to 60 minutes; the ticket costs €15 per person.

When is Kotor busiest?

When the cruise ships are in. The Port of Kotor’s 2026 schedule shows about 520 cruise calls on some 220 days, with 60 to 86 calls a month from May to October and four or more ships on about 45 days. Most ships arrive between 07:00 and 09:00 and sail between 16:00 and 19:00, according to the Port of Kotor’s arrivals list.

For a calmer visit, stop in Perast first and, on days with several ships in port, stay in Kotor into the late afternoon, when the ships begin to sail and the old town empties.

Why stop in Perast?

Perast is a small baroque village on the road around the bay, about 14 km before Kotor. Opposite it lies Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa od Škrpjela), an artificial islet built up over centuries after sailors found an icon of the Madonna there on 22 July 1452. Its church holds 68 paintings by the local baroque artist Tripo Kokolja, and boats run to the islet from the village waterfront.

In summer, visitors’ cars must be left in the car parks at either end of Perast, which is otherwise open only to residents’ and hotel guests’ vehicles, so allow a few minutes’ walk.

What is a realistic timetable?

A sample summer day with a driver:

TimeStop
07:00Pick-up in Dubrovnik
about 07:45Border checks at Karasovići and Debeli Brijeg
about 09:30Perast: walk the waterfront, boat to Our Lady of the Rocks
about 11:30Drive on around the bay to Kotor
about 12:00Kotor: lunch, the old town, and the walls if you have the energy
about 16:30Leave Kotor
about 17:30Border checks on the way back into Croatia
about 19:00Back in Dubrovnik

On a peak day the return queue can add hours, so keep the evening free. The Kotor–Lovćen cable car, which climbs to 1,348 m in 11 minutes for €20 return, can replace the walls on a very hot day.

How should you travel?

A rental car gives freedom but needs the rental company’s written permission to cross the border, and you drive the queues yourself. A car with a driver for the day handles the road and the border while you look at the bay. To stay in Montenegro rather than come back, book a one-way transfer to Kotor.
