What is a car with driver?

A car with driver is a vehicle and driver hired by the hour or the day, rather than for a single journey. The driver collects you, waits while you visit, and drives you on to the next place and home again. You decide the plan; the driver handles the roads, the parking and the border queues.

It suits travellers who want to see several places in one day, families who would rather not drive on unfamiliar coastal roads, and anyone who wants to enjoy a wine tasting without worrying about the drive back.

Which day trips work best?

Most full days from the city fall into four routes. Each fits comfortably into one day with a driver.

Kotor and Perast, Montenegro

Kotor is about 92 km away by the road around the Bay of Kotor. Its Old Town is part of a UNESCO World Heritage property inscribed in 1979, and its walls climb about 1,350 steps to the San Giovanni fortress. Perast, about 14 km before Kotor on the same road, faces the islet of Our Lady of the Rocks.

The day crosses the Croatia–Montenegro border twice, so it is long: usually 10 to 12 hours, with about four hours of driving. Read our full guide to a Kotor day trip.

Mostar and Kravica, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Mostar is about 146 km away, roughly 2½ hours each way plus the border. The day centres on Stari Most, the Old Bridge, rebuilt in 2004 after its destruction in 1993. The 25-metre Kravica waterfalls, on the Trebižat river about 40 km south of Mostar, make a good stop on the way back in summer. Our guide to a Mostar day trip covers the timings.

Ston, the Pelješac peninsula and Trsteno

Ston is about 55 km north-west of the city, just over an hour away. Its walls were begun in 1358 to guard the salt pans, and about 5.5 km of them survive, according to the Wikipedia article on the Walls of Ston. On the way, Trsteno’s arboretum, which already existed by 1492, is about 20 km from the city. The day can continue to the wine villages of the Pelješac peninsula.

Cavtat and the Konavle valley

Cavtat is about 19 km south-east of the Old Town. A half day here leaves time for the harbour promenade and lunch, with a drive through the Konavle valley on the way back. This is the shortest of the four days and fits into a half-day hire.

What should we bring on a day with a driver?

A little preparation makes a long day easier:

  • Passports for every passenger on days that cross into Montenegro or Bosnia and Herzegovina; EU citizens may use an identity card for Montenegro.
  • Cash for entrance tickets and small purchases. Bosnia and Herzegovina’s currency is the convertible mark (KM), fixed at 1.95583 to the euro, and some ticket offices take cash only.
  • Comfortable shoes, especially for the climb up Kotor’s walls or the stone streets of Mostar and Ston.
  • Swimwear and a towel in summer, if you plan to stop at the Kravica waterfalls or a beach.
  • Water and sun protection: the car is air-conditioned, but the sights are not.

Child seats are in the car if you asked for them when booking, and the driver keeps your bags safe while you explore.

How is the price worked out?

You pay for time, not distance, within generous limits:

  1. Choose the vehicle: a car for up to four passengers, a minivan for up to eight, or a premium minivan for up to seven.
  2. Choose the length: by the hour (minimum 3 hours), a half day of 4 hours or a full day of 8 hours.
  3. A full day includes up to 300 km, which covers Kotor or Mostar and back.
  4. Anything beyond the booked time is charged at the hourly rate, and only after you agree.

Fuel, motorway tolls, the Bay of Kotor ferry, parking and the driver’s waiting time are all included. Entrance tickets, meals and guides are not.

How does it compare with renting a car?

A rental car is cheaper for a long trip on which you will drive every day. For a single day, a car with driver avoids the costs and risks that come with renting: insurance excess, fuel, the cross-border papers a rental company requires, and above all parking.

Parking near the Old Town is scarce and expensive: the two car parks nearest the walls charge €20 for the first hour from May to October, according to the city parking company, Sanitat, and the roads around the walls are a restricted zone in season. Our comparison of renting a car and booking transfers works through the numbers for a typical week.

How do we book a day with a driver?

Send us the date, the number of passengers, where you are staying and the places you would like to see. We reply with a suggested timing for the day and a fixed price. Cancelling is free up to 24 hours before the start. For single journeys rather than a full day, see our private transfers or the complete price list.

Questions about hiring a car with a driver

What is the minimum hire?

3 hours. A half day is 4 hours and a full day is 8 hours. If a day runs longer, the extra time is charged at the hourly rate, and we always agree it with you first.

Is the driver also a tour guide?

No. Your driver knows the roads and the timings, but is not a licensed tourist guide. For a guided walk in Kotor, Mostar or the Old Town, a licensed local guide can meet you there.

Can we cross into Montenegro or Bosnia and Herzegovina?

Yes. Day trips to Kotor and Mostar are the most popular full days. Every passenger needs a valid passport or, for EU citizens going to Montenegro, an identity card.

What happens if we want to stay longer?

Tell the driver. Extra time is charged at the hourly rate, and the driver will tell you the cost before agreeing to change the plan.

Are entrance tickets included?

No. Tickets for places such as Kotor's walls, the Ston walls or the Kravica waterfalls are paid on the spot. The rate covers the car, the driver, fuel, tolls and parking.

Can we change the route on the day?

Within reason, yes. The hire is yours, so the plan can change during the day as long as the total time and distance stay within what you booked, or you agree to the extra.
